Sean Scully (b. 1945) is a renowned painter, printmaker, sculptor and photographer. Though his work spans multidisciplinary fields, Scully is most recognized for his large-scale abstract compositions composed of grid-like forms - often inspired by construction and architectural motifs.
In his signature artworks, Scully often employs geometric repetition, intersecting and overlapping rectangles, squares and lines, ultimately creating tension between forms and layers of color.
Scully has explained that his work is very personal, often drawing from his own experiences and tragedy. This is thoughtfully reflected in his subdued if not melancholy palette. Scully’s distinct technique confronts the viewer with a modest vulnerability that differs from his predecessors, such as Piet Mondrian, whose abstraction followed a much more methodical approach.
This rare print is a fine example of Scully’s geometric composition. The uneven lines in this piece disrupt the rhythm of the otherwise calibrated composition, a human touch that creates an air of ambiguity and curiosity that encourages further inquiry.
