Pietra dura is an Italian phrase meaning "hard rock." It's a mosaic of sorts that consists of various colored stones inlaid in another stone, typically marble or onyx, and was an evolution of a similar Ancient Roman art form called opus sectile. This method of craftsmanship began in Italy during the Renaissance and was perfected in Florence, where by the late 1800s it was often purchased by wealthy tourists as a souvenir.
This lovely pendant holds an octagonal piece of pietra dura with a blossoming white flowers set in a 14 karat yellow gold frame. The mosaic is composed of coral, agate, and turquoise, and is in immaculate condition.
